ABOUT US:

In January 1987 Mr. Aubrey Chinnery, the then Chairman of the Reading Room Committee decided on hearing that several of the villages in the area had Carpet Bowls in their village halls to see there was any interest in Great Yeldham.

On February 1st., on a mat borrowed from the Braintree District Council, the first meeting was held. There were thirty-seven at the first Sunday meeting and fifty three on the following Wednesday. With so much interest it was soon decided to purchase a carpet, and another sooon followed, as within the first year there were one hundred paid-up members with an average attendance of about fifty. It was five pounds annual subscription and fifty pence per evening including a cup of tea and a biscuit.

In 1988 after quite a few friendly matches it was decided to enter the Essex League. In 1994 we entered the Ferris Cup which is competed for by teams from all over Essex, and after winning several rounds went on to win.

1995 was to see a change. It was decided to have a Committee to run the club and have a proper constitution to comply with their rules. By this time there was a steady membership of thirty. On 5th April the first AGM was held and a committee was elected. It was agreed to keep the fees the same.

In 1999 Essex C.B.A. decided to alter the league format and split Essex into four areas with each area having two leagues. We were put in the first division of the north league.

We have continued to enjoy some success, winning the league five times and the Ferris Cup again in 2005. We also enjoy a good social time going to many tournaments and running two ourselves, one to raise money for the Reading Room and one for the Crossroads Charity. We play many friendly matches and have an annual dinner at Christmas and enjoy our roll-up night every Tuesday evening, 7.30 - 10.00 pm at the Reading Room, where we would always welcome new members.
